Day 64 - 1 de Agosto: Camarones

It seems like i'm sleeping here much better than everyone else. I've been hearing complaints about the air con blowing hot air out in the middle of the night and a 4 am rooster wake up call, but i've been sleeping through all of it. Hence, i woke up pretty refreshed and ready for another day of work. Breakfast was eggs, bread and plantain again - some good, solid calories to keep us going. Afterwards, the day continued pretty normally - we jumped into the back of the truck and were taken to the Camarones worksite. Here, it was time to figure out what everyone was doing. Yesterday was a training day of sorts, and since today is our last full day of work for this initial time here (we will be back to the village a little later in the month), we really worked hard to get as much done as possible. We were split into teams again, and i was part of the team in charge of twist-tying the chicken wire to the house. That's right, hundreds of little twist ties applied all over the perimeter walls of the house because the concrete won't be even if the chicken wire isn't flush with the wall. We did that the entire morning before being brought back to camp. The work was even more enjoyable since one of the group brought a bag of candy for us to share. Sugar always makes work better. Returning home, we had a bit of time to chill on the hammocks before our lunch of fish in a coconut marinade. It was great. Afterwards though, i went back to my room and realized how sunburnt i had become! Even though today was cloudy, i'm still red all over! Sunscreen seems to be useless for me - the places i get are a light red and the places i miss are beet red. I better transition to a tan soon so that this silliness can stop. Later on, we were picked up by our usual truck and brought back to the worksite for the afternoon shift. It was all similar work, but the sky was a bit cloudier, at least for some of the time. I was stupid and forgot my water bottle back at camp, so i found a small container on site to use as a cup. The sun is so intense here and I was feeling it. One of my group let me use their higher SPF sunscreen for my neck and arms. In the last hour, i had to find some shade, so a few of us decided to throw a football around with some of the locals. I strategically stood myself in the shadiest spot. Eventually i got creative and turned the game into baseball with bamboo poles as bats. It's cool to see the progress of the houses, in only the short amount of time we've been here. They're already making great progress on the roofs. As the sun began to set, we made our way back for dinner. It was a spectacular ocean sunset that was in full view as we drove down the hill. Dinner tonight was another slab of fish with vegetables. Then after, we all got changed for an anticipated soccer match we were going to have against Camarones. Unfortunately, it had to be rescheduled because the gym had lost power for the lights and the players became tired from working on the site with us. We will definitely play when we return to the site. Again, the day ended with a few beers and a lot of getting to know each other. It's only been a few days, but i have a feeling this is going to be a great group!
