Back to a familiar place

Day 70 - 7 de agosto: Papallacta to Misahualli

It was really nice to have another day to sleep in (for a bit). Although, it was a cold morning in the mountains, my room had an ancient radiator that seemed to keep the room at a perfect temperature. Other people were too hot or too cold. I began to pack up my stuff - of course, my swim shorts were still wet from last night, however i only had the clever idea to put them on the radiator this morning. At 9:30, we met outside our cabins for breakfast. It was sort of unconventional - the HLD team had bought breakfast items for us (oranges, cereal, muffins) all in individual packages. It reminded me of the stuff we got in boxes at world youth day. Most people were unsatisfied, but when it comes to food down here, i'm not picky at all. In fact, when people can't finish their food or don't want it, they give it to me because i'm "the south american, iron stomach". I'm glad to get a little extra food here and there. After breakfast, the guys all went back to our cabin and we played poker for fun. It wasn't too much longer before we packed up the bus and eventually hit the road. Our first stop was on the way - a little local restaurant for lunch. We had great juice and large servings of chicken. Again, i got some of other people's food too. I noticed that i've been getting better at remembering the names of the group - it's hard when the group spontaneously triples in size. This was the last stop before Misahualli. We got off the bus and had to walk a couple blocks to the river bank - finally, we were out of the mountains and back in the good ol' amazon region. Walking down, we actually saw a good few monkeys on the streets and in the trees. We walked to some boats and loaded in. We were driven about five minutes to a spot where we'd start tubing down this amazon river. They were single tubes this time, and most of the time here was in a calm current. There was one time that a current pushed me into shore, but i paddled out of it. The tubing ended with one final set of rapids, and since the water was shallow, i rode my tube down on my knees which was fun. We arrived on the side of the river and all unloaded on a set of stairs that seemed to lead nowhere. We had to wait on these stairs for a little bit because the boat with our bags was delayed. To pass the time, we played a big game of telephone which was amusing. When they arrived, we made a chain to bring the bags up, then after, we were assigned rooms. The rooms were just like the jungle lodges in Peru - beds with mosquito nets and everything! Dinner was a chicken and rice dish and the night progressed pretty regularly. The bar didn't have enough beer for the group, funnily enough, so they sent out another boat to go buy some more from town. The night wasn't late at all but when we were awake, the sky was beautiful. Away from the city, every star was out. Tomorrow we do a jungle hike - right in my element.
