A bumpy start

Day 1-2 (may 30-31)

And so my trip begins...and if the beginning is a sign to what's yet to come, then you can believe that i'll be home either much stronger or completely torn apart, lol. From even YVR, the trip has been abnormal to say the least - random baggage checks, a big, fun airport tram ride in dallas, a flight with emergency exit seats (the leg room sure was nice). However, loosened legs would be little compensation for our bags not following us along... Yup, you can say i'm travelling pretty light right now (washed the clothes on my back in the hotel shower today and dried them with a hair dryer). People here are pretty optimistic that we'll receive them before long, and right now, all i can do is share that optimism - no sense losing my head when i'm suppose to be enjoying a trip. Anyway, you all want to hear about the good stuff - the arrival in Lima. Well first, we found a "nice" taxi driver who drove us to our hotel (and apparently overcharged us a fair bit - never had much luck with taxis). Lima traffic is insane!! Everything from the stop signs to the turn signals to even the lanes are suggestions rather than rules. It was crazy - felt like we were on the amazing race. We then arrived at the very nice hotel and checked in and phoned home. Apparently we're covered for baggage delay so if we dont see any bags tomorrow, we have some money to spend on the essentials. And keep in mind, we checked in really early in the morning so from here, we had the whole district of Miraflores to explore - and it was incredible! From the incredible cliffside coast to bustling outdoor markets to finding a freaking lighthouse!!! to amusing locals who for the most part were genuinely nice and weren't trying to steal your bag when you weren't looking. I'm really surprised at how much spanish i've retained. I've been able to understand a lot of speech from the locals and quite proud of it! We've also decided to stick with the spanish theme and play uno in our down time. The competitiveness between us is really amusing, especially with the lack of sleep. We also found a starbucks here in lima and i managed to keep to tradition and rate a peruvian restaurant's attempt at lasagna for dinner! I rate it pretty high, had a unique spice to it that i know but couldn't name - however i still have to give mom's lasagna the highest score :) anyway, gotta get rested up, contiki starts tomorrow! I have many more pics on my camera so hopefully one day i'll be at a computer to upload them all! I'll keep everyone posted as much as i can!
